Quark Fusion

Results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) show that Lambda particles can fuse, releasing even more energy than nuclear fusion reactions. (Lambda particles are heavy baryons, similar to neutrons and protons but containing a different arrangement of quark types.)


Whilst this suggests a novel method of generating energy or making a weapon, at this stage neither seems likely because (a) the lifetime of free quarks is so short (~1 picosecond) that a chain reaction could not be sustained, and (b) the only way of producing Lambdas would be to smash or split baryons, which would require massive energy input, as used in the LHC.
