Sterile Neutrinos detected (again)

A fairly confident report from the MiniBooNE experiment at FermiLab this weekend, stating that they have detected “sterile neutrinos” – these are neutrinos which don’t interact with matter at all; unlike the other 3 “flavours” of neutrinos – electron, tau and muon neutrinos which continuously interconvert (known as oscillation). The suggestion is that all neutrinos also convert into sterile neutrinos for a time before converting back into one of the standard flavours.

If verified, this will require changes to the Standard Model of Physics.

There have however been several failed attempts to detect these sterile neutrinos since they were first reported by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) in the 1990s.
